North by Northwest further develops its criticism of the ethical perspective of the zealous patriot in a scene that takes place after another elaborate staging directed by the Professor, this time Thornhill’s death.

In order to deflect Vandamm’s now aroused suspicions from Kendall, the Professor has arranged for Vandamm to witness her shooting Thornhill—albeit with blanks—hoping this will convince Vandamm of her allegiance. After the piece has been acted—apparently with great success—the Professor allows Thornhill and Kendall a brief meeting. As they are about to part, the following conversation takes place:

PROFESSOR: She’s going off with Vandamm tonight on the plane.
